Steps to Start Your Own Non-profit Organization (NGO) in India
1. Find the need in the community
The starting point for solving a problem is to become aware of it. When you think about creating a nonprofit organization, what are the problems or needs you see in your community? You can start thinking about the solution once you have identified the problem and determined how you can help.
2. Choose and save a name
Once you decide to establish your nonprofit organization, you must offer a name that describes it. You can choose a name describing what the association is doing or to whom it is addressed. Some organizations only use a word describing a concept. Check that the name has not been used before. You will need to contact the office of the Secretary of State. There are such offices in each state. In order to save the chosen name, you will have to pay a small fee and file a document called “statutes.
3. Request an IRS tax exemption
means not making money. Non-profit organizations may request not to pay income taxes. You have to prove that you will not make money by filling out certain forms. The Internal Revenue Service will review these forms. If the IRS believes you qualify, you will get the status 501 (c) (3).
4. Write a business plan
You will need a business plan, even if it is not a business! This is an important step in the creation of a non-profit organization. Without a business plan, you have no specific idea what steps to take, what money to collect or how to achieve your goals.
5. Immatriate your nonprofit organization
Once you have obtained the statutes of your organization, you can choose to register it. This will give your management structure more credibility for your programs and services. Deposits and fees vary by state. Registration allows you to register your non-profit organization, but it does not exempt it from exemption 501 (c) (3).
6. Form your committee
A committee is a group of people who make decisions about the organization. They are generally not paid for their work. They help decide which projects the organization is dedicated to and also help raise funds and mention the organization to other people. Having people of different ages, races and professions on the committee brings new ideas.
7. Establish a budget
How much money do you need to start your nonprofit organization ? Determine if you want to rent an office and if you want to hire other people to help you. Take the time to list the equipment you need. Think about supply and transportation. Perhaps you can borrow or haggle over certain things, or receive donations from the community.
8. Call on your community for support
If you set a community goal, you will need support. Connect with your community to find the right people and other organizations to support your idea. List the key people and organizations and explain your projects to them. Libraries, nonprofit organizations and resettlement centers are all great places to bond. For example, if your idea is to play basketball youth after school, you can join a community center and coaches.
